CT Teens are Some of the Country’s Safest Drivers, Pay Second-Highest Insurance Rates
Motor vehicle accidents continue to be the most common cause of teen deaths. In response, CarInsurance.com conducted a survey of teen drivers’ habits, looking at national data and input from 500 parents about their children’s driving habits.
To compile data, researchers looked at several factors: Insurance costs, fatal crashes, strictness of Graduated Drivers Licensing (GDL) laws, drinking and driving habits, texting behind the wheel and compiled a composite score. Based on these factors, teens in Connecticut placed sixth for safety.
Are teens in our state guilty of bad driving habits? Based on data and reports, about 9 percent of teens drink and drive, 36 percent text or email behind the wheel and the average teen driver is charged $6,822 in annual insurance premiums; only teens in Michigan pay more per year.
Based on what surveyed parents said, nearly two-thirds have allowed their children to break one GDL law and 64 percent think their children make questionable decisions behind the wheel. Reports indicate that parents saw or allowed their teens to do the following:
- Driving with friends – 33 percent
- Driving at night – 30 percent
- Using a cell phone – 29 percent
- Driving after curfew – 27 percent
- Speeding – 27 percent
- Driving unsupervised – 20 percent
- Driving under the influence – 8 percent
