Motorcycle Insurance as an Auto Endorsement: When Do You Need It?
When taking out long-term motorcycle coverage, you essentially have two options: Take out a separate policy independent of your car insurance or add a motorcycle endorsement to your auto policy. In either case, your bike gets the basic protection it needs so you can hit the road. Each type has its pros and cons.
Realize that your basic car insurance policy does not include your motorcycle. Thus, having a motorcycle license and taking out car insurance does not sufficiently cover you unless you add an endorsement to your auto policy.
Adding a Motorcycle Endorsement
Who might want to add a motorcycle endorsement to his or her existing policy? A rider that uses a motorcycle throughout the year, but it isn’t their primary mode of transportation.
To add an endorsement, you first need to pass your state’s motorcycle license test. Then, work with your insurer or agent to add a motorcycle endorsement to your auto policy. However, know that the endorsement increases your coverage within the same limits. After your policy is modified, you’ll receive one bill for both forms of coverage.
Advantages
Along with convenience and meeting state minimums, an endorsement gives riders another benefit: If you’ve been having difficulty taking out a separate motorcycle policy specifically because of driving history or credit score, an endorsement offers enough coverage to continue riding. Some insurers may consider you too high-risk if you have past tickets, a lower credit score or accidents on your driving record. Thus, getting a separate motorcycle policy proves to be a challenge.
Disadvantages
While your endorsement meets state minimums, it’s not equivalent to full coverage. Specifically, you’re locked into the same limits as your standard auto insurance policy, without exception. For some riders, this combination is less desirable, as those who ride more frequently may want a higher liability limit. Additionally, your policy offers no coverage for modifications and custom parts.
