Harvard Pilgrim Departs CT Market: Understand Your Options for Commercial Insurance

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, a not-for-profit insurer based in Massachusetts, has decided to depart the Connecticut market after a decade. Businesses offering employer-provided health insurance through Harvard Pilgrim will have to find another carrier or agent.

By partnering with HUB/Ion Insurance, you can continue offering this incentive within your employee benefits package!

What to Know As Harvard Pilgrim Leaves CT

The departure of Harvard Pilgrim is not immediate. Parent company Point32Health told the Hartford Business Journal that it intends to withdraw all fully insured commercial products as of January 1, 2023 – including its small group plans.

Coverage for all consumers will continue as expected up to this date, but Harvard Pilgrim has stopped underwriting new policies in Connecticut as of April 2022.

Founded in 1969, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care became one of the country’s premier not-for-profit health insurance providers. Service extends from Massachusetts through neighboring New England states. Last year, the company merged with Tufts Health Plan, another Massachusetts-based not-for-profit health insurance provider, and formed Point32Health.

Harvard Pilgrim provided a spectrum of coverages to businesses looking to offer employer-provided health plans. From state network-only HMOs to PPOs providing national-level coverage, these plans encompassed no-cost preventative care to vision, emergency, both prescription and generic medications, chiropractic and acupuncture visits. Roughly 135 hospitals and 28,000 doctors in New England took Harvard Pilgrim coverage.

Point32Health’s decision comes after a multi-year analysis of commercial insurance in Connecticut. As the company pulls its Harvard Pilgrim plans from the state, Point32Health intends to devote more effort to its relationship with CarePartners of Connecticut to support its Medicare Advantage plans.
