Protect Your Home's Insurability This Winter

Protect your Home’s Insurability this Winter by Preparing for Common Threats

Homeowner insurance companies are strictly underwriting coverage for new applications.  In addition, customer’s renewal homeowners policies are being re-underwritten strictly as well.  Impacts on your coverage include denial of a policy, non-renewal of existing coverage or increase in your premium cost for the homeowners policy.  The primary focus has been on water damage claims and if you have had two or more claims in the past five years your homeowners insurance may be in jeopardy at the next renewal date or when you shop for new coverage.

Despite many people’s impressions of large events in our recent past, water damage claims include those from catastrophic events such as the October Snowtorm and Hurricane Sandy.   Even that $500. claim for lost food in your freezer will count against you.   Moving forward it is important that homeowners take steps to reduce the chances of damage by using proven homeowners loss control techniques.

Attached is a great flyer from Encompass Insurance.  The flyer addresses Winter Storm Preparation and uses a checklist format focused three key areas.  The sub-headings include:  Ready Your Home, If Your Area Is Blanketed By Extreme Cold and If You Lose Power.  In addition, there is a link for you, to obtain more helpful information, to Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety.
