Spring Cleaning – Tread Lightly!
For many homeowners, spring is a great time to get organized and start on many much-awaited projects. Excited to get started, many will try and do it all themselves. While this may save homeowners money, it can increase the risk for accidents or damages to the home if not done carefully!
Before jumping in, it is important to read the labels on all containers. Be aware of the warnings that come along with the products you are using. When reading these labels, if you see the words “flammable,” “toxic,” or “ignitable,” then it means that the product is likely hazardous.
Several of the everyday cleaning products are hazardous all on their own, but can become even more dangerous when they are mixed with other household products. Some household cleaners, such as furniture polish and wood stain/varnish are highly flammable and can even explode. Bleach can be toxic on its own, but mixing it with ammonia-based cleaners can release poisonous gases, which can be lethal.
One of the ways homeowners cut costs to update their homes is by doing it themselves. Believe it or not, oily rags and other similar items left out can quickly lead to spontaneous combustion which is a cause of major losses each year.
Below are some ways to help lower the risk of these hazards from happening:
- Never store flammables in the same area as products and chemicals that are known to be corrosive
- Keep rags that are used to clean with flammable products in a sealed metal container
- Do not smoke or use heat or flame near these products
